Today will be a better day. I repeated the words for the hundredth time as I turned the corner onto the sidewalk. Maybe if I said it enough, it would be true.

Something flickered in my periphery. Mrs. Abernathy, peering out from behind her curtains again. I waved politely and she backed away. Maybe she was on Team Lily too. I kept walking and Mrs. Abernathy returned to her post. Why was she so interested in me? What did she want? Maybe she was just bored, cooped up in that house all day.

I made it all the way to the school and my locker without so much as a glance from anyone, but my reprieve stopped there. A crudely drawn picture of a witch burning at the stake was taped to my locker door. I ripped it off and tossed it into the same garbage can where I’d found my books the day before. I closed my eyes. Don’t get angry. It’s going to be fine. After three deep breaths, my anxiety settled. That’s it. I can do this.

I organized my textbooks in my locker and snapped on the replacement lock I’d dug out of the junk drawer this morning.

“What did you do to my sister?”

I flinched and glanced up. Bennett leaned against the locker bank, watching me. I closed my locker and took another deep breath. Then I scanned his face, his gorgeous face, trying to figure out what he did and didn’t know. No use volunteering a list of my alleged crimes. “She didn’t tell you?”

“Of course she did, but I usually stop listening when she starts on one of her rants.” He wore a crooked smirk that any other day would’ve made me blush, but today I knew better. He was probably here to hate on me too. I’d hoped he might have somehow climbed into a black hole and missed this whole mess, but maybe I had no luck left. I slid my gaze toward my locker, studying the lines of the vent and wishing he wouldn’t see the humiliation in my eyes.

Then Bennett laughed—not a mean, check-out-the-freak kind of laugh, but a low, nervous chuckle that tumbled into the small space between us and lingered, waiting to be answered. I jerked my head back. He grinned and folded his arms loosely against his chest, leaning against the locker bank. Maybe he wasn’t mad at me. Or at least, he didn’t seem to be.

“I thought you might have a less dramatic version of the story for me.”

“It’s all a big misunderstanding.” I twisted my fingers in the strap of my bag, choosing my next words carefully. I couldn’t say “going out with” and “Drew” in the same sentence. Conjuring a mental picture of that crazy would ensure Bennett would never want to see me again. “I’m hoping I can get it straightened out.”

“I figured.” He ran his hand through his hair. “But I know how determined Lily can be when she’s on the warpath. So if you ever need a friend, you can talk to me.
